As a consequence of the unplanned nuclear explosion at an American military base the greater part of the population perished. Everywhere there are dead scorched expanses, deserted cities. But somehow people, and among them some children, are trying to set up their everyday life in the catacombs and basements. And they succeed to a certain extent. The main character of the movie, the scientist Arlsen, strives to understand the reasons of the calamity and to find a spiritual fulcrum, offering hope of survival.
