In January 1943 the powerful Soviet offensive in the direction of Donbass and Kharkov started the liberation of Ukraine from Nazi occupation. The Red Army came to the borders of the Dnieper, crossed it and liberated the Ukrainian capital Kiev. Mykola was one of those, who crossed the Dnieper. He was wounded on that military battle. Enemy splinter wounded Mykola’s knee. However since that Mikola walking very slowly, and only with a stick. Now he lives on the outskirts of the city Mena, in Chernigov region of Ukraine. He is not the only Mena’s veteran – veteran movement in these places always has been built monuments and burned Eternal Lights in every village. Now the events of those distant years somehow forgotten, lost in every day’s problems. But for Mena’s veterans 9 May still the main day of the calendar.

Born in 1963 in Lvov, USSR. Graduated from VGIK (1988, class of S.Medynsky). Director of documentary cinema, producer, head of the studio “Vertov. Real Cinema”. President of the “Laurel” National Prize for Non-Fiction Cinema and Television. President of the Russian Festival of documentary auteur cinema “Artdocfest”. Winner of the prizes “Laurel”, TEFI, “White Elephant”, and of the prize of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, prizewinner of a range of national and international film festivals. His filmography includes “The Boomerang” (1988), “The Posting” (1990), “Lenin’s Body” (1991), “Extracts from Another War” (1993), “Good Fortune” (1995), “Private Chronicles. A Monologue” (1999), “Broadway. The Black Sea” (2002), “Anatomy t.A.T.u” (2003), “Our Native Land” (2006), “Virginity” (2008), “Motherland or Death” (2010), “Iconoscope” (2011), “Pipeline” (2013) etc.
