Film critic and expert, “Kommersant” newspaper reviewer

Born September 14, 1950, Starokonstantinov, Khmelnitsk oblast (presently Ukraine). Graduated from Mechanic-Mathematics Department, Lvov State University (1972), VGIK Film Expert Department (1978). Defended Ph.D thesis on Luchino Visconti in 1982.

1977—88 “Pravda” culture department. Secretary of Filmmakers Union Board, chairman of Conflict Commission on Creative Issues, lifting the Soviet censorship ban of 200 prohibited films. Actively cooperated with foreign FIPRESSI colleagues.1987—91 and 1997-2005 – FIPRESSI Vice-President, 2005 – FIPRESSI President. Regular jury member at international film festivals (Berlin, Locarno, Tokyo, San-Sebastian).

Since 1972 – numerous publications, cooperation with many Russian and foreign publishers («Iskusstvo Kino», «Seans», Sight & Sound etc.), For many years - “Kommersant” film reviewer. Author of a dozen of books on Soviet and International cinema, including works on Aki Kaurismaki and Catherine Deneuve.

Winner of several professional awards, including movie press award to the best movie journalist (for publications in “Kommersant” and “Iskusstvo Kino”, 1994). Numerous Russian Film Experts and Critics Guild awards (1999, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008).

Author and organizer of “Euphoria” festivals (4 times a year) presenting the most interesting art-films of upcoming season. Since 2012 “Zerkalo” Film Festival program director.
