In a small mountain village in Hunan, Southern China, it is the beginning of spring. Honggui, a 14-year-old girl who lives with her aunt, daily stares anxiously at the still-clean toilet paper stuffed into her underpants. At school, she refuses a request by her best friend, Baiyu. At her aunt’s house where she has lived for 7 years, her aunt often plays mahjongg deep into the night, and Honggui is careful not to be left in a room alone with her uncle. The only thing that makes Honggui happy is spending time with Ajiu, her childhood friend who has been working in the village quarry since quitting school. Honggui gives him eggs from her grandmother’s chickens, and in return Ajiu gives her stone stamps that he’s carved himself. After school they go to deliver things to elderly people in the village. Honggui’s period still hasn’t come. She calls her mother, but never gets a call back…
HUANG JI
Born and raised in Hunan Province, China. She studied screenwriting in Beijing Film Academy during 2003-2007. She directed her first documentary, “Underground”, in 2005. Her screenplay, “Lingling’s Garden”, was turned into a feature film and won the Audience Award at the Cologne Chinese Film Festival. In 2009, she directed her first short film, “The Warmth of Orange Peel”, which was selected by the Generation program of the Berlin IFF. Her feature directorial debut, “Egg and Stone”, was shot in her hometown in 2011 working with all non-professional actors.
